False Eyelash Trend –  Q & A

Q. Truth or False Eyelashes

Dear Joanne, I am seeing a lot of women wearing false eyelashes, not just for evening wear but in the office. Is this a new fashion? I think it looks a little weird, especially the really big lashes which remind me of big hair and trailer parks. What is your opinion? Any tips or advice? – Lashless in SeattleTips and advice for False Eyelashes at the office

A. Dear Lashless,

This seems to be a growing trend, but I don’t care for it either. (I’m not sure about the trailer park reference. Terry once lived in a trailer park and he rarely wears false eyelashes, at least not big ones.)

Celebrities don’t work in offices

Young and mature women are starting to wearing false eyelashes to work. As a corporate image consultant, I have been asked by HR to address this trend at in-house dress and branding seminars. Once again we’re making the mistake of taking our professional image cues from celebrities. The last time I checked Lady Gaga and most celebrities don’t work in offices.

Au natural

I’m not against long, lustrous lashes, and if false lashes are chosen with care they could work for work. It does require time, lots of practice, a steady hand and a light touch to create a ‘natural’ look. More often than not, they end of up looking droopy, about to fall into your soup, or like the lash tips could really injure someone.

Spiders from Mars

My advice is that women become their own image consultants and take a critical look in a magnified mirror. The eyes are the centre of communication and you don’t want heavy lidded, spidery lashes to take away from your impact or professionalism.

Loud lashes

It reminds me of a quote I use when describing clothing that is distracting: “What you’re wearing speaks so loudly I can hardly hear what you’re saying.” The same applies with obviously fake, over the top lashes. And don’t get me started on overly dramatic eye makeup.

Are you dressing for success and credibility or for a fashion shoot? What do you think?

  1. No, definitely not! It’s right up there with a dramatic eye for the office. Life is not a photo shoot ladies! Be “natural” with your make-up. It’s far more authentic for you and those you interact with.

    Happy Saturday!

  2. Thanks for sharing. I agree, extensions need to look ‘natural’ for work and it requires practice and patience to get it right. If the lashes are excessively long, or worse if you can see the adhesive, I get distracted and can’t concentrate on what the person is saying.

  3. False eye lashes mmmmm no…. not for me, but I have seen some lovely eyelash extensions and I feel as long as the extensions are taste full and not for “the club” then they are fine and quite attractive.
