Oprah Fashion and Life

As a special surprise, Terry bought me a ticket to see Oprah live in Edmonton. He knows I am a fan. (Secret – He is a fan too. Terry is a new age kind of guy.) Both of us have enjoyed watching the show and reading her book club picks over the years. So I got to go along with some girl pals (Terry stayed at home but his twitter feed revealed that he secretly wanted to go).

Live in Edmonton

Alberta Oprah fans were very lucky as she appeared in both Edmonton and Calgary. Prior to the show, the Edmonton Journal asked me to comment on Oprah’s clothing and style choices. (I’ve put a link to the article below with more photos.)

First, they asked me what makes Oprah so appealing to me

It is her everywoman quality. She’s so inspirational because she’s real. She’s a woman of colour, she’s slightly overweight, curvy – I think she’s given us an attainable version of beauty.

I loved the show’s makeovers of real women. They’d give you the designer option, but they’d also give you the Dress Barn option, where you can get the look at an affordable price.

Then they asked me what I liked about Oprah’s style

Oprah’s own style is always contemporary and age-appropriate. She wears clothes that flatter her figure, often in jersey fabrics that drape well. She sticks to V, scoop or cowl necklines that work well for a woman with a shorter neck and bigger bust.

Here is a 13-minute video of the first part of her Calgary show. (after the 20 sec ad)

“Everyday, every one of us gets to paint on the canvas of our lives.”

Oprah was inspiring and we Canadians loved her

Behind Oprah’s style is a lot of substance

Oprah’s openness about her struggles with her weight and her work-life balance, makes her all the more likable. She’s so authentic … she’s natural, on and off camera, it seems. We all would like to be that. We all want to feel that we’re enough, and Oprah reinforces that.

What you see is what you get

Unfortunately, Terry didn’t get me a backstage pass (you can’t have everything). But I talked to some women who got to meet her personally and they told me she was just as warm, caring and personable in real life as she was on the stage.

  1. Thank you for sharing! I was having a rough day and took a few minutes to watch the video. I’m glad I did. It is so true that “everyday, everyone of us gets to paint on the canvas of our lives”.
