How to dress for success this fall
If you’re looking to add some classic investment pieces to your wardrobe and personal brand, you’ll love this season as much as I do. These looks are in the flyers and stocked in Canadian and US stores this fall. I‘ve included my top choices along with some of your favorite corporate image consultant’s how to look good advice.
My top 7 picks & advice how to wear them:
Joanne’s Pick & Tip #1
Cowl neck tops, dresses or sweaters as they flatter and elongate the neck and work well under most jackets & cardigans. They’re also great as stand-alone pieces or worn with your favourite statement necklace or two.
Joanne’s Pick & Tip #2
Draped tops with ruching strategically placed on the midriff are a girl’s best friend as they camouflage any midriff ripples.
Joanne’s Pick & Tip #3
Collarless boucle jackets ala Coco Chanel (don’t purchase the boucle skirt if you carry any weight on the bottom). They can also be worn in a more relaxed fashion with jeans and extend the life of your jacket.
Joanne’s Pick & Tip #4
Cashmere V neck sweaters are timeless. While they can be a little pricey, do the cost per wear math and you’ll be down to penny’s per wear.
Joanne’s Pick & Tip #5
Sheath dresses, while classic and lovely, work best on hourglass silhouettes. For the rest of us we must rely on alterations to let out the seams in the hips, provided there is enough seam allowance.
Joanne’s Pick & Tip #6
Textured cardigans, in place of jackets, work for anyone in a more creative or relaxed environment. They also look great when belted. Choose a belt width that works best for your body proportions. (How to wear a blet advice – If you’re short waisted consider a dropped waist belt or a skinny belt. If you’re long waisted, lucky you, you can go big and bold.)
Joanne’s Pick & Tip #7
Pencil skirts – just be sure they have enough ease through the hips and thigh so you can move and sit comfortably without the skirt riding up.

Mea culpa, Fran, Thanks for your sharp editor skills. I fixed it although I was temped to leave it as an exercise for me to get over my perfectionism (see Joanne’s latest blog on my twitter tweets – New Twit on Twitter https://styleforsuccess.com/blog/a-new-twit-on-twitter/
Hi Joanne. I enjoy reading your articles/tips. Under sheath dresses did you mean to use the world “rely” instead of reply?
