Bossypants Tina Fey shares some business tips and advice how to succeed for women

Comedian, writer and producer Tina Fey has written a funny and compelling memoir called Bossypants.  Not so much a memoir as a humorous tip and advice book. It’s about her career and life in the male dominated world of entertainment and improv comedy in which she has learned how to succeed. No tube tops for business

I was intrigued by her advice for women in business – among other things she says “no pigtails, no tube tops and cry sparingly – although if you’re so mad you could just cry, then cry.  It terrifies everyone.  Also, don’t eat diet foods in meetings.” I agree wholeheartedly! In the work place you want to stand out for the right reasons.

Do you mean business?

If you want to be taken seriously, then look like you mean business —  this doesn’t mean you have to look dull and boring. You just need to pay attention to which fashion trends you’re going to follow.  In addition to Tina Fey’s list I might add – no lacey camis worn with business jackets.

Men are different

You see, men and women look at fashion differently. When it comes to wearing lace, women see it as pretty and a feminine detail. Men associate a lacy camisole with the bedroom, not the boardroom. I have polled hundreds of seminar participants and the men confirm this perception again and again.

Place for lace

My dress for success tip is to be cautious with lace. Lace can be arsenic to a career. That’s not to say that you can’t wear lace at all, if the garment has feminine rather than sensual overtones such as an accent piece or a scarf then it can work for work.

Does this make me look …

Avoid wearing clothing that makes you appear sensual or sexy —  save those looks for your personal life. Take bossypants and my advice, if you want to succeed make sure your clothing is sending the messages that you want it to send. (Also take Sarah Palin’s’s tip to brush up on your english.)
